July 6th – Statehood Day (Mindauginės): A Celebration of Unity, History, and Pride
Midsummer in Lithuania is a special time. It is a time when the long and warm days are crowned by one of the most important and grandest holidays of our state – July 6th, Statehood Day (Coronation of King Mindaugas of Lithuania), commonly referred to simply as Mindauginės. It is not just a red day on the calendar or an extra day off. It is a profound reminder of our nation's roots, endurance, and unity that stretches across centuries.
In this article, we invite you to briefly remember the historical significance of this day, enjoy the living traditions of the holiday, and discover ways to express your patriotism stylishly – by using merchandise and unique custom printed apparel.

A Glimpse into History: Why is Mindaugas so important to us?
To understand the meaning of Statehood Day, we must travel back more than seven hundred years – to the 13th century. On July 6, 1253, something happened that changed the fate of Lithuania forever. Mindaugas, having united the Baltic lands, was crowned the first (and, as it later turned out, the only) King of Lithuania by the will of Pope Innocent IV.
This act was not just an assertion of personal power. It was a massive diplomatic achievement. By accepting baptism and the crown, Mindaugas integrated Lithuania into the European political system. We became an officially recognized, equal state of the Western Christian world. Although after Mindaugas's death the state experienced various upheavals and the royal title was not preserved, the foundation laid by Mindaugas allowed Lithuania to survive, grow, and later become the powerful Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
This is exactly why July 6th symbolizes the beginning of our statehood. It is a day when we celebrate our ability to be strong, united, and recognized in the world.
A Living Tradition: The "National Anthem" around the world
Today, Statehood Day is celebrated throughout Lithuania and beyond its borders – with exhibitions, historical festivals, knight tournaments, concerts, and commemorations. However, over the past decade, a particularly touching and unique tradition has been born, becoming an inseparable part of this holiday.
Since 2009, when Lithuania celebrated the millennium of its name, every evening on July 6th, at exactly 21:00 local time, Lithuanians all over the world gather to sing the "Tautiška giesmė" (National Anthem). It doesn't matter if you are in Vilnius Cathedral Square, by a campfire in the countryside, in faraway Australia, or in America – for those few minutes, the whole nation unites into one living voice. It is an unprecedented phenomenon showing that a state is not just a territory. A state is its people, united by a shared history and love for their country.
